Alice in Wonderland

I created this Alice in Wonderland cake for the first baby of Lucie and Tom whose wedding cake keen readers will already have seen (the Bride and Groom under Lamppost cake). Baby Alice's Christening was on 10th April and her cake features her climbing out of the Mad Hatter's teapot.

St Mark and the Lion

For Mark Lewin’s reception into the Church I made this cake with his patron saint on it: St Mark the Evangelist accompanied by the Winged Lion of St Mark. The books round the base are the ones Mark read on his “book journey” to the faith. The words round the figures read: “Eratis sicut oves errantes sed conversi estis nunc ad Pastorem”, a quotation from the Epistle of the day of his reception which translates as: “You were as sheep going astray but now you are converted to the Shepherd” (2 Peter 21-25) Co-incidentally it was also Mark’s birthday on the day of his baptism, so there is a Many Happy Returns of the Day message in Latin on the cake board. Congratulations, Mark!

St Cecilia

For Cecilia Shaw's Christening cake I made this cake with her patron saint on the top. St Cecilia is the patron saint of music, not because she is known to have played any instrument but because she spurned earthly music, preferring to listen to the angelic choirs of heaven. This model is loosely based on the painting by Raphael in which the saint is pictured holding the portative organ upside down with other instruments including a viol scattered around her feet. Roses and lilies were chosen as additional decorations because, according to legend, St Cecilia's guardian angel crowned her and her husband with these flowers on their wedding night by after they dedicated themselves to Christ.

Columba and the Loch Ness Monster

I'm delighted to announce the arrival of Columba Benedict Shaw on 19th August. For his Christening I made a cake featuring St Columba admonishing the Loch Ness Monster - the first literary reference to the Loch Ness Monster is to be found in St Columba's hagiography, written by Adomnan of Iona in the seventh century.
